In 1912, lawyer Nicola Ernesto Mattera, made a gesture of extraordinary cultural value: he purchased the Aragonese Castle from the Italian state. With an expenditure of 25,000 liras, Nicholas Ernest bought not just a castle, but 25 centuries of a rich and complex history. At the time of its purchase, this magnificent complex-which was once a fortress, prison, church headquarters and gardens-was in a state of disrepair.

After the historic purchase of the Aragonese Castle of Ischia by Nicola Ernesto Mattera, it was his son, Antonio Mattera, who undertook the titanic work of reconstruction and restoration. Antonio, with the same passion and dedication as his father, transformed much of the Castle, making it the jewel it is today.

Antonio Mattera devoted himself fervently to the restoration of the castle, recognizing the importance of every corner of it and safeguarding its historical integrity.

In the 1970s, under the leadership of Antonio Mattera, the Terrace established itself as the Castle’s premier dining spot. This special place has become an indispensable landmark, giving a breathtaking panoramic view of the Bay of Naples. Ideal place for a restorative break, immersed in a historic setting of rare beauty. Today, the baton has passed into the hands of Antonio’s son, Giovanni Mattera, who with passion and dedication continues to carry on the business, keeping alive the spell of this unique corner in the heart of the Aragonese Castle.
